Interview – DOSA (Malaysia)

DOSA stands for Death On Systematic Abuse and they are a 3-piece Noisegrind / Noisecore band formed in Perlis Indera Kayangan, the northern part of Peninsular Malaysia. Consisted of MattJan (vocals), Maddy (guitars) and Amir a.k.a Mack (drums) since the beginning, this long-running quartet has released a lot of recording materials; Tapes, CDs, splits, compilations, etc including the one I got recently; “Talking about Punk Scene and Cronyism” cd-r EP produced under Blazt Promotion (2018). Well, here we have a discussion with Amir and Maddy on behalf of DOSA. – Interview by Harshziqr [31.01.2020]

What’s new in DOSA? Share with us a little bit about your band’s background and what really have encouraged you to form DOSA?
Amir: Hi, nothing new in our camp. We are waiting for some split to be released, but nothing is confirmed yet on the date. About band’s background; nothing is impressive. We just 3 kids that want to do something different at that time and we decided to play noisegrind because we think it fit us perfectly. DOSA was formed as a platform for us to express our feeling on the subject that we are interested in. Not so nice background I must say.
Maddy: Hi Harshziqr, muddy here, nothing new, DOSA just played at Ipoh last December after long hiatus, what encourage us to form DOSA was we’re boring with typical guitar hero song and try hard to play as good as you can type, its lame, so lets do some shitty noisegrind, get blast the amplifier.

Why is the Noisegrind / Noisecore genre your choice to play in DOSA?
Amir: Why not? Actually the music that you heard in all our records are honestly from our heart. We don’t need to practise hard to be something else that we are not. We just play what we want to play.
Maddy: We have difference musical taste but still in the same root, it will be punk, crusty and noisy, grinding core in it.

What messages do you guy want to express through your music / noisy sound?
Amir: It varies, from normal political injustice, social corrupt, self motivation etc. We might have 10-20 topics in every releases that we try to express in our song titles.
Maddy: Everything around us, latest issues, war and making fun of politician.

We knew that DOSA has a lot of releases under your belt. Give a list of 10 most essential (or favourite) releases of the band?
Amir: None of them, all are the best and have different story prior it releases. We treat all our releases the same and important in the DOSA history.
Maddy: Every released have own story and memory but for me the most unforgettable is: 1. DOSA- promo tape, 2. It’s Fun To See You Die, 3. Parkinson/Dosa split CD, 4. 4-way split with Anal Massaker, Potabilizadora & Urinary Dysfunction I still remember one of these song were recorded acoustically in a car during birdflu diseases and we make sound of chicken on back ground while MattJan shouting like hysterical guy who lost his wife.

Do you guys playing live, attending gigs and making tours somewhere? Have any memorable shows ever to share with?
Amir: Rarely playing live as DOSA due to personal commitment etc. Nothing to share but thanks to all who comes and see DOSA, buy our material; support us in any way, no matter what, thanks you very much.
Maddy: Yes we do play live and will give you high gain noisy sound experience like cutting grass using a broken China made grass cutter machine, just hit us for invitation if there is no obstacles we will go and destroy your ears.

What have been planned for the future of DOSA, and any next releases confirmed?
Maddy: Got some new recorded songs and project in the pipeline, will be available soon.

How do you see the current local (Malaysia) noise / grind scene? It’s getting better or just full of bullshits (wannabes, rock-stars, etc)?
Amir: Not sure about that boss. But its okay if some band wanna be rockstar or wannabes, who cares anyway right? In this free world, you can be anyone/anything you want.
Maddy: Love and shout out to our brother Hazree (DxTxAxP) for what his doing and effort right now, you should contact him.

Thanks for your time. Last words?
Amir: Thanks for this opportunity, we appreciate it. Keep up good work. Keep the diy spirit alive. All the best with your zine.
Maddy: Thanx editor for this interview. Noise is protest.
