Interview – BAIXO CALÃO (Brazil)

BAIXO CALÃO was formed in mid-1996 in the city of Belém, Brazil. Only in 2003 their debut material (demo) entitled “Homo Postumus” has been released. Then, the band stepped forward with many other releases; Tapes, CDs, splits, etc. Recently, in January 2019 they managed to unleash another new full-length entitled “Necrológio”. The vocalist, Leandro Pörckö with us now talking further about Baixo Calão. Grind with no compromise! – Interview by Harshziqr [03.03.2020]

Introduce us the band history and the lineup?
Formed in 1996 by vocalist Pörckö, the band’s first songs were played in punk rock style until mid-1999 - the year in which the entry of drummer William Gomes brings the weight and violence necessary for the band to move from hardcore to grind. So the first record of the band appears with the demo “Homo Postumus” in 2003 with punk rock songs in the grindcore outfit, and so on. The current band formation is Pörckö and Jardel (vocals), Marcio Oldman (double bass), William Gomes (drummer) and Danilo (guitar).

Please describe the music of Baixo Calão in details, including your major influences?
Our lyrics, a priori, gravitate towards our repudiation before the filthy curtains that moralism (especially Christian moralism) and hypocritical conservatism sow and perpetuate prejudices, abuses, crimes, absurdities, racism, hunger and a plurality of violence. In this way, we talk about Human Tragedy, but not as a painting made with delicate lines, and as tragedies in the wake of the gerund of Being; tragedies lived and having to be and swallowed like vomiting, having to carry the hell of others while being whipped by ours. Our main influences were and are the bands Agathocles, Luzifers Mob, Cluster Bomb Unit, Health Hazard, Hail of Rage, Disrupt, Nausea and Extreme Noise Terror.

What’s interesting about playing Grindcore?
Playing the grindcore is as if the vociferous disapproval and disbelief orchestrate the presented sound violence. And the public response is the legend of this symbiosis… being part of that liturgy is a catharsis in the form of diatribes.

What have the band releases so far, and let us know some of your essential releases?
We consider the HOMO POSTUMUS EP-cd released in 2003 to be our first record. Then we launched the demo / cd-r REPÚDIO & DESCRENÇA (2006); TU CRIAS (2008) cd; ATMO MEDIOKRA (2012) cd; 2013 4-way LIVE GRINDCORE (tape); 2013 BAIXO CALÃO (grindagnosticore) × MURUROA (CZ) LP vinyl 12; 2014 BAIXO CALÃO × SRAM (Russia) EP vinyl 10; 2016 BAIXO CALÃO × SLAG × VJONLENZA cd; 2017 AGATHOCLES A BRAZILIAN TRIBUTE cd; 2018 BAIXO CALÃO × CHIKARA (Bosnia) × MASISI (Chile) tape; 2019 NECROLÓGICO cd.

What are your plans for the future releases?
We want to continue recording new songs, participate in split in all possible formats, tape, cd, vinyl.

Please explain about the subjects written in your lyrics?
Living in a country where you have sought to use the gears of a fascist government, especially a government that is declaredly military allied to religious interests, makes the pillars of our letters to be Disbelief, Dissatisfaction, Repudiation and Anguish to live. Thus, we write about racism, hypocrisy, moralism, prejudice, discrimination, plutocratic politics, etc.

How do you see the Grindcore scene in your homeground?
The number of grindcore bands or flirting with this aspect has grown in our city. And this also motivates us to continue, because that way we see more people dedicated to not accepting the current forms of oppression.

Thanks for your time. Last words?
Thank you very much for the support and dissemination space! Stay active so that other bands can count on this space!! Health and long life to all involved!!!
